鈥淚鈥檓 done with this. I鈥檓 tired of running, I鈥檓 not running away anymore…听I’m done with it and I鈥檓 through running away from God. I’m going to run听to听him, instead.鈥
This idea is at the heart of 鈥淚鈥檓 Thru’ Runnin’,鈥 a new song from local rapper Bobby Wade.听The accompanying music video was produced by 51黑料网鈥檚 Advanced Video Production Class, led by Professor Evan Hewitt, and will premiere at the department鈥檚 Film and Design Showcase on April 30.听听
51黑料网’s partnership with Wade was a natural one, as he鈥檚 already been a pivotal piece of various community events sponsored by the university. Last year鈥檚 Freedom Fire series is probably the most visible of these events鈥擶ade was a headline performer at the concert, held at Bartlesville鈥檚 Unity Square, and used the opportunity to showcase his music and tell his amazing testimony.听听
鈥淭here are people who won鈥檛 go to church or won鈥檛 hear that, but maybe they鈥檒l hear and get a seed planted from my music because that鈥檚 the thing they鈥檙e听drawn to.”听
“I Had the Foundation”
奥补诲别鈥檚听story听is听a journey听of pain, addiction, and ultimately redemption, and it started when he was a child听growing up听in Tulsa.听听
鈥淚 had an upbringing in the church. But as we know there’s a difference between having head knowledge of who God is and having an actual relationship with Him,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 got lost somewhere in my teen years and got addicted to partying. I was drinking, I was addicted to prescription pills, and I was playing basketball at the same time,听being recruited by colleges.鈥听
By this point, he had moved to Nowata, and started finding himself drawn into darker crowds. 鈥I ended up joining a gang, and kind of started being motivated by music, particularly rap music… and I started being drawn to that, and that life, and it ended up leading me to ruining my basketball career. I听ended up in prison.鈥听
While he was incarcerated, Wade felt the Lord鈥檚 tug on his heart, and he听harkened back to his background in church. 鈥淭rain up a child in the way they should go, and when they鈥檙e older they won鈥檛 depart from it,鈥 he said. 鈥I听had听the foundation.鈥澨听
It was his third time being arrested, and Wade was tired of the trajectory his life was traveling down.听听
鈥淚 knew that something had to change,鈥 he said. 鈥I hit rock bottom, and I knew that I couldn’t continue in that life.听It didn鈥檛 happen overnight, but I cried out to the Lord and accepted Him into my heart, in my听lowest point of all, and听I听began to try my best to walk it out.鈥澨听
When he got out of prison, Wade dedicated his life to learning all he could about his new faith, getting a master鈥檚 degree in theology and figuring out what his life as a Christian would look like. He鈥檇 dabbled in rap before he was saved, but initially wanted no part of it now that he was a Christian. 听
鈥淲hen I felt the call of the Lord to do Christian rap and tell my story, I actually ran from it for about four or five years,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 thought there was no听way听I鈥檓 supposed to be rapping. I鈥檝e already tried this, and it didn鈥檛 work.鈥听
Eventually, though, he decided to give it a shot, aiming his music at the people the church often can鈥檛 reach. 鈥淭here are people who won鈥檛 go to church or won鈥檛 hear that, but maybe they鈥檒l hear and get a seed planted from my music because that鈥檚 the thing they鈥檙e听drawn to,鈥 he said.听听
鈥淚鈥檓 Thru’ Runnin’鈥听is a powerful example of this听kind of communication, detailing 奥补诲别鈥檚 thoughts through his rock-bottom conversion experience.听听
“You鈥檙e pushed to be better, pushed to step it up each and every day to be the best you can be to develop that passion into something that you’re proud of.”

A New Challenge
奥补诲别鈥檚 partnership with 51黑料网鈥檚 Advanced Video Production class was perfect for both sides鈥 it gave him an opportunity to have his first music video made, and it gave the students in the class a chance to take on a new medium.听Most of the students hadn鈥檛 worked on many music videos, so the听opportunity听to work with a client from concept to execution was a priceless one.听
For Richard Perkins, a sophomore Digital Cinema major in the class, the project was a way to represent a unique viewpoint and powerful message.听听
鈥淚 love the ability that film has to take you into another world,鈥 he said. 鈥淣ot just as an escape. It can bring you into somebody else鈥檚 world so that you can understand what they鈥檙e going through.鈥 听
Sarah Davis is another student involved in the project. As a double major鈥Graphic Design and Strategy and Digital Media Marketing, with a minor in Digital Cinema鈥攕he was most excited by the chance to听approach a video concept directly with a client.听听
鈥淚t’s just been a really awesome experience working at a professional level for a client with this big of a project,鈥 she said. 鈥淓ach of us has taken turns directing parts of the video听and storyboarding,听and coming up with concepts to pitch to him.听He’s been awesome to have,听enthusiastic.鈥澨听
To accommodate the class schedule, as well as 奥补诲别鈥檚, the filming was done in a short amount of time. 鈥淲e shot the entire music video in about nine hours, which is pretty incredible to get enough footage for all of that,鈥 Perkins said.听鈥淓verybody kind of had their chance to film something that was within their vision and be able to communicate that to Bobby and to the cinematographer and to the other students who are helping with the other things.鈥听听
For Felix Aranda, a sophomore Digital Cinema and Graphic Design major, the best part of the process was getting familiar with the practical aspects of the creative process. 鈥Personally I love doing music videos. That’s what I actually want to do,” he said. “[But] I think just getting to get familiar with the production process and see how to interact with talent [was very cool].鈥澨
Both Perkins and Davis are quick to point out that听opportunities听like these are what makes 51黑料网鈥檚 film program special.听听
鈥淲ith any film program, you will get out what you put into it,鈥 Perkins said. 鈥淚 think the benefit of a smaller class and a smaller school is that you can get more opportunities to put more into it, and get more out of it.鈥澨听
For Davis, it鈥檚 just an example of the belief that the professors have in the students.听听
鈥淥ut of any school that you’re ever going to go to, 51黑料网 is going to be the one that believes in you,鈥 she said. 鈥淣o matter what, no matter the struggles that you come from, the life that you are dealing with outside of [class], the communication and the passion that the professors have here,听the passion surrounds听you… You鈥檙e pushed to be better, pushed to step it up each and every day to be the best you can be to develop that passion into something that you’re proud of and enhance your skillset. And you’re excited each and every day that you wake up to听improve听yourself,听one day at a time.鈥听
