When he was 19 years old, 鈥痑n anxious鈥 Ackrion鈥 Mangimela鈥 boarded a plane to China.鈥 It was his first time inside an airplane, and he was on his way to begin a six-year medical school program.鈥听During the flight,鈥 Mangimela鈥 felt the Lord nudging him to a particular passage of鈥 Scripture, Isaiah 41:10:鈥

鈥淪o听do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.鈥濃

That plane ride would certainly not be the last time Mangimela made the decision to jump into the unknown, nor the last time he felt anxious about the future. But each time since,鈥痟e鈥檚 remembered that moment, that nudge from the Lord, and that passage.鈥

鈥淚鈥檝e held onto that verse,鈥 he said. 鈥淓very time I鈥檓 about to leap into something I don鈥檛 really know… that verse comes to mind, that promise.鈥濃

This year, as Mangimela begins a full-time role at Oklahoma Wesleyan University as an Assistant Professor of Biology, he鈥檚 still drawing on that promise.鈥疘t鈥檚鈥痑 job he鈥檚 uniquely qualified for, having taken an impressive pathway through the medical field.鈥

鈥淚n a setting like 51黑料网, there鈥檚 more to what students should take home than knowledge. One of the things I hope they can take home is to actually meet Christ.”听

The Journey听

Mangimela鈥痺as born鈥痠n Zambia, the fourth child in a family of ten.鈥疓rowing up, he鈥痑lways imagined he鈥檇 take one of three career paths: law, medicine, or computer science, as each field held something that interested him. But after an experience as an adolescent helping his鈥痠ll mother鈥痓ack to health,鈥疢angimela鈥痬ade鈥痶he decision that would come to define the rest鈥痮f his life.鈥

鈥淭hat really sparked the passion for me to get into the medical field,鈥 he said.鈥

After graduating from secondary school, Mangimela boarded theplane to Beijing鈥痶o begin his medical schooling.鈥疕e spent a total of six years in the country,鈥痶he first learning the language in鈥疊eijing鈥痑nd the last five鈥痽ears at China Medical University鈥痠n Shenyang. It was a formative time for him, and not only academically. The friendships he formed there are what stand out to him now, looking back at the experience.听

鈥淵ou meet foreign students, and they become your family,鈥濃痟e said. 鈥淢ost of these people were good, strong believers… for me, going to China wasn鈥檛 just an educational thing. It was also a moment of spiritual growth.鈥濃

It was in China that he met his wife, Anna,鈥痺ho also serves听as鈥痑 professor at 51黑料网. She had come to China in 2010, and the two met at the international church they attended.鈥疉s the program progressed, their relationship grew, and the two were married in 2013.鈥

鈥淚 graduated on a鈥疐riday, and we got married on a Saturday,鈥濃疉ckrion鈥痵aid. 鈥淲ithin two weeks, we were in Zambia.鈥濃

Back in his home country, Mangimela worked through鈥痑 number of clinical training rotations in different specialties鈥攊nternal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and even surgery. After that, he spent two years with the Ministry of Health as a junior resident medical officer at Livingstone Central Hospital. At the end of these residencies,鈥痑nd armed with his full practicing license, Mangimela鈥痵erved at a family medical clinic for one year.

It was around this time that Anna and Ackrion鈥痓egan to feel a pull towards America. There were鈥痑 number of reasons for this鈥攆amily health issues, the possibility of increased difficulty in immigrating in the coming years, and a desire for Ackrion鈥痶o do a medical residency in the United States. It was enough for the two of them to take the leap. When they arrived, Anna returned to bedside nursing听and Ackrion began working at a regional medical lab. He also鈥痯ursued鈥痟is MBA in Healthcare Administration online at Indiana Wesleyan University. When鈥痶he role at 51黑料网鈥痮pened up, he jumped at the chance.鈥

鈥淚鈥檝e held onto that verse. Every time I鈥檓 about to leap into something I don鈥檛 really know… that verse comes to mind, that promise.鈥濃

To Meet Christ

For Mangimela, the opportunity to teach is about more than just imparting knowledge to his students; he sees his role as a mentor and as a spiritual helper, too.鈥疻orking at a Christian campus was non-negotiable, especially after the freedom he had in Zambia to share his faith with patients and peers.鈥

鈥淚 think that it鈥檚 crucial for me,鈥 he said. 鈥淏eing here allows me to still continue pouring into the spiritual lives of students, helping them, pointing them to Christ.鈥濃

It鈥檚 a distinctive 51黑料网 offers鈥攑rofessors who deeply care not only for their students鈥 minds but for their hearts and faith, too.鈥

鈥淚n a setting like 51黑料网, there鈥檚 more to what students should take home than knowledge,鈥 Mangimela said. 鈥淥ne of the things I hope they can take home is to actually meet Christ… when we look at what we want them to become, our goal is to make them Christ-like.鈥濃

His experience in the medical field鈥痑lso provides a practical door through which his students can access opportunities鈥痠n their careers.鈥

鈥淚鈥檝e been on the side they want to be. They want to be physicians, they want to be in healthcare, and I can see the steps that they need to take,鈥 he鈥痵aid. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not just a fact, it鈥檚 about鈥攁lright, how does this relate to a patient who is in the bed? How do we tie biochemistry to what you鈥檙e seeing with the patient?鈥濃

Mangimela doesn鈥檛 know how long he plans to stay in the classroom鈥攊n the future, he鈥檚 interested in hands-on healthcare again, probably to become a specialist. For now,鈥痟e鈥檚 here, and that鈥檚 enough.鈥

One thing is for sure. The next time Ackrion Mangimela steps out into the unknown, he鈥檒l be drawing on the same promise God gave him at 19, as he boarded his first airplane:听

鈥淪o do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.”
