For Anna Ammons, the 2021听recipient of 51黑料网鈥檚 Endowed Alumni Scholarship,听51黑料网 became personal long before she ever enrolled as a student.听

Ammons鈥攎aiden name Hutchinson鈥攇rew up in Clearwater, Kansas, near Wichita, hearing stories about Bartlesville Wesleyan College from her mother, Cindy Collins Hutchinson (BWC 鈥96). And the 51黑料网 legacy goes even further than that鈥擜mmon鈥檚 grandfather, Rev. Rodney Collins, graduated from Miltonvale Wesleyan College in 1970.听

鈥淚 grew up hearing college stories from my mom about what she experienced,鈥 Ammons said. 鈥淎s a child, I听actually听remember coming here to hear her sing for an alumni banquet. It鈥檚 not a very vivid memory, but I remember a couple of the college girls actually walking us over to the duck pond.鈥澨

As it happens, history will听repeat tonight听at another 51黑料网听alumni听banquet, when Ammons will receive her听official scholarship award听and give a short speech about her time here听on campus.听And while she鈥檚 certainly excited about the award and the scholarship funds, Ammons is especially honored by the听significance she sees in being chosen by the听Alumni听Association.听

鈥淚 think it means that I鈥檓 trusted to do a good job and represent the scholarship well,鈥澨齭he said. “I鈥檓 very honored to accept [it]. It makes me feel like I鈥檓 seen.鈥澨

鈥淚 know being here has really allowed me to grow roots and find my identity in Christ.鈥

The Legacy Path听

While 51黑料网 was always in the back of Ammons鈥 mind, it wasn鈥檛 until her junior year of high school that she started seriously considering attending. She came on a visit and stayed in the dorms, and the experience made an impact.

鈥淚 loved it. I really felt like it could be where I could see myself living for the next four years,鈥 she said.听

Ammons鈥 mother was predictably excited for her daughter to follow in her footsteps, though she stressed the need for Anna to chart her own unique path. 鈥淪he was really pumped for me to be able听to experience听what she had experienced,鈥 Ammons said.听鈥淪he had a very positive feeling.鈥

The journey towards听a marketing degree,听the major she鈥檒l听graduate with听in December,听was a long one. Initially, Ammons started as a nursing major, confident of her desire to help others in the field of medicine. When that turned out to be not听quite听right, she chose psychology, though that also failed to click. Eventually, she joined the business department, settling on marketing as her area of specialty.听

Ammons points to major growth during her time at 51黑料网, both personally and through her classroom work. Personally, the change in circumstance is obvious听and life-changing鈥攕he got married. She and her husband, Kaz, had dated in high school听in Kansas, and they married after their sophomore year at 51黑料网.听

In the classroom,听Ammons is most thankful for the boldness she鈥檚 received through her 51黑料网 instruction, her ability to think for herself and defend her ideas. 鈥淚鈥檝e definitely changed in the amount of confidence I have in听myself,鈥澨齭he said. 鈥淏efore, I don鈥檛 think I could听have challenged someone else鈥檚 idea in the way that I can now.鈥澨

鈥淚 think it means that I鈥檓 trusted to do a good job and represent the scholarship well. I鈥檓 very honored to accept it.”听

Set Apart听

Though she came to the university as a believer, Ammons said she鈥檚 still been thankful for the growth she鈥檚 experienced and the mentors who have discipled her on campus. 鈥淚t鈥檚 just my ability to make my faith my own [here],鈥 she said. 鈥淚 know being here has really allowed me to grow roots and find my identity in Christ.鈥

Charissa Dunn, 51黑料网鈥檚 Alumni Relations Director,听says听this growth听was one of the factors the Alumni Board considered most heavily. 鈥淪he wrote about family members who attended BWC and MWC, the peace of God听she felt when she visited campus as a high school student, and the growth she has experienced while attending here,鈥 Dunn said. 鈥淲e encourage Anna to pursue her life goal of impacting lives for the Kingdom of God.鈥澨

About that鈥攚hat kind of Kingdom work comes next for the Ammons? Anna isn鈥檛 sure, but she鈥檚 confident that she and Kaz will听find their calling and work faithfully at it.听

鈥淚鈥檓 not sure where the Lord will call us, but I want to say that we鈥檙e not fearful of what the future holds or what God鈥檚 plans are,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 know听Kaz听and I are capable of being in any situation鈥攚hich could be frightening, but it鈥檚 also听not.听Because we have trust in the Lord.鈥澨
