For Dr. Josh McNall,听the connection between his writing and his teaching听is simple.听鈥淚f you鈥檙e not reading and researching, then you鈥檙e probably not learning,鈥 he said. 鈥淎nd professors need to learn, too.鈥听
This听central tenet听within 51黑料网鈥檚 School of Ministry and Christian Thought听is听an idea that听both听McNall听and听Dr.听Jerome Van Kuiken听take seriously, as听evidenced听by their respective听recent releases. Dr. Van Kuiken听contributed a chapter to the compilation听,听published in November, while听McNall鈥檚 latest鈥鈥was released in September.听听
While different in scope and subject, both projects help the professors hone their academic instincts and remain fresh in the classroom. 鈥淲riting and publishing helps me to keep up with what鈥檚 going on in the field of theology, which then affects听what听I teach my students,鈥 Van Kuiken said.听听
鈥I鈥檝e become even more convinced that American evangelicalism needs to return to Jesus as the focus of our faith鈥攅ven as we wrestle with questions that we can鈥檛 always answer.鈥听

The Space Between听
The idea for McNall鈥檚 work came听from watching Christianity in America听grapple with itself听in these听recent tumultuous years, as听he began to听identify听factions听emerging听in competition with each other.听
鈥Perhaps听emerged out of a basic observation: American Christianity is fracturing,鈥 he said. 鈥淥ne faction of the church is increasingly identified with a kind of narrow and politicized dogmatism, while another faction drifts toward doubt and听disillusionment. I wanted to speak to that divide by way of a reinvigorated Christian imagination that engages with theology,听in conversation with culture听and with听the arts.鈥澨听

Perhaps is available through InterVarsity Press.
The premise of the book is听an interesting question鈥is all uncertainty bad?鈥and one that provided the idea for the title of the book.听Perhaps听not.听That uncertainty is听not an easy space to live in,听admittedly;听it requires brutal honesty, difficult hopefulness, and the willingness to ask tough questions. But McNall鈥檚 book explores the听value in embracing this听鈥減erhaps鈥 space.听听
During the writing process, McNall says he came to听understand听the commonalities between both sides of the factions he identified. 鈥淚鈥檝e come to believe that both crippling doubt and angry dogmatism often share a common core,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a need for certainty over Jesus, and it鈥檚 a willingness to be conformed to the image of our culture rather than the image of God鈥檚 Son…听I鈥檝e become even more convinced that American evangelicalism needs to return to Jesus as the focus of our faith鈥攅ven as we wrestle with questions that we can鈥檛 always answer.鈥澨听
鈥淲hat surprised me was how beautifully it all came together and how much fun I had writing this chapter.鈥听

Superhero Studies听
Van Kuiken鈥檚 path to the听Theology and Spider-Man听project came about a bit differently.听He saw the project on Facebook and thought it looked intriguing, eventually submitting a proposal and being accepted.听His chapter tackles the听Spider-Man听film trilogy from the early 2000s, starring Tobey Maguire, examining how those movies illustrate the three sources of sin in Christian theology: the world, the flesh, and the devil. On the whole, he says it was a fun introduction to a new and as-yet unfamiliar academic discipline鈥攕uperhero studies. It was also perfectly timed for the release of the newest Spider-Man film.听
While there are always a number of challenges with any writing project, Van Kuiken points specifically to the demands of the different audiences his chapter had to appeal to. 鈥淸It] had the challenge of addressing different types of readers simultaneously,鈥 he said. 鈥淥n the one hand, it needed to be understandable to those who either hadn鈥檛 seen the movies or who weren鈥檛 familiar with Christian theology or superhero studies. On the other hand, it couldn鈥檛 come across as patronizing or too superficial. The chapter had to be interesting to novices, fans, and scholars alike. But what surprised me was how beautifully it all came together and how much fun I had writing this chapter.鈥 听
McNall had a similar challenge with his book, intending Perhaps听both for theologians and for college students. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not a popular level book,听but it鈥檚 also not just for scholars. I hope it serves the church, and particularly those individuals鈥攊ncluding pastors鈥攚ho are wrestling with their faith and with our current cultural moment,鈥 he said.听听
In addition to听Perhaps听and听Theology and Spider-Man,听both McNall and Van Kuiken continue听to produce resources for the church. McNall听hosts听his听successful听Outpost Theology听podcast, where he interviews luminaries across the spectrum of American Christianity, and he recently submitted his听newest听book听manuscript, dealing with the doctrine of atonement. Van Kuiken contributed a chapter to a new collected听Theology and Tolkien听volume, as well as a听manuscript听about听the biblical听book of听Jude. Both are expected next year.听听
So, yes鈥攂oth professors are still learning, too
