For Melissa Morris, the transition to full-time professor at Oklahoma Wesleyan University wasn鈥檛 an extraordinarily difficult one, and that鈥檚 for one simple reason: she鈥檚 always been teaching.听

鈥淎s nurses, we always educate,鈥 she said. 鈥淸All along] I think God was paving that way鈥hey, changes are happening and I’m equipping you for that.鈥

Morris began her first semester of full-time teaching at 51黑料网 this semester, but her connections to the university go back a decade deep. She graduated with her BSN degree in 2011, and most recently graduated from 51黑料网鈥檚 MSN program in 2021. 鈥淚 kept coming back,鈥 she said.听鈥淪o that鈥檚 a pretty good reference.鈥

鈥淎s nurses, we always educate…听I think God was paving that way鈥攈ey, changes are happening and I’m equipping you for that.鈥

Growing into Grace

A native of the Bartlesville area, Morris was always familiar with the university, but听51黑料网 wasn鈥檛 always the plan. Nor was nursing鈥擬orris鈥 original goal was to become a dental hygienist, taking her pre-req courses at 51黑料网 and transferring to a more specialized dental program. But once she started taking classes, things changed fast.

鈥淚 was in the dental chair and decided this was not for me,鈥 she said, laughing.

Still, the university played a major part in her formation, specifically in providing a level of spiritual accountability. 鈥淚t solidified what you were taught as a child,鈥 Morris said. 鈥淓ven with your walk with Christ, you had some accountability there. You have professors who are holding you accountable鈥攏ot only to your Christian views, but also in nursing and what鈥檚 ethical, what鈥檚 moral. You really do grow.鈥

After graduation, Morris worked at Bartlesville鈥檚 Jane Phillips Medical Center, working the night shift at first. She gained experience in the med-surge, then moved to post-surgical. In 2018, she began working as a clinical instructor with 51黑料网鈥檚 Department of Nursing. When it came time to choose her master鈥檚 program, the decision was easy.

鈥淚 liked going here because I already knew the background,鈥 she said.听鈥淚 knew who I was, who听my professors would be, for the most part. I just like the Christian background.鈥

What Morris 诲颈诲苍鈥檛 like was the timing. 鈥淚 thought January 2020 would be the perfect time,鈥 she joked. 鈥淎nd then COVID hit.鈥

As has been widely documented, the challenge to those in the medical field during the COVID-19 pandemic was extraordinary鈥攖o work as a nurse and take master’s level classes was even more difficult. Morris said she started her MSN track with 25 students and graduated with only eight.

Even still, she found the program to be a source of strength during the storm. 鈥淲e had some spiritual discussions and those really did help,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ecause obviously all of us were going through COVID. All of us were nurses, all of us felt it. And we could really talk to one another and have a community.鈥

Never Say No to More Education

Within the MSN program, Morris chose the Nursing Education track, always intending to pursue a faculty role with her degree. She began teaching at 51黑料网 on an adjunct basis first, eventually transitioning seamlessly into her current full-time posting.听Even now, Morris finds that her goals听are similar to the goals she鈥檚 always had in her career: it鈥檚 about helping those you work with get it.

鈥淚t鈥檚 always rewarding. It鈥檚 the same thing with patients鈥攚hen you see them getting better, you see that your interventions are meeting your goal,鈥 she said. 鈥淲ith your students, when you see that light bulb come on, and you can see that they鈥檙e understanding, or see that they鈥檙e applying their knowledge to test questions and making it applicable. As a clinical instructor, when they can master a task, or they actually get to start their first IV… It鈥檚 really rewarding.鈥

While she鈥檚 not sure what the future holds鈥攚hether or not she鈥檒l want to continue her formal education or eventually go back to serving in a nursing position full-time鈥擬orris鈥 advice to herself in this stage of life is the same advice she gives to students now: be open to learning and change.

鈥淣ever say no to more education. I always said I鈥檇 never go back,鈥 she said, chuckling at the students who now say that to her. 鈥淎lways be involved in education and bettering yourself.鈥

That鈥檚 exactly what she intends to do: stay involved in education, bettering herself and the students who are blessed to be in her orbit.
